Scouts on the Water 2026
Sunday, July 26, 2026
12:00–5:00 PM
Munroe Falls Metro Park Lake
521 South River Road, Munroe Falls, Ohio 44262
Troop 160 and the Keel-Haulers Canoe Club are teaming up for an afternoon of kayaking, paddling instruction, water-safety activities, boat ball, and a community potluck.
When you arrive, look for the Keel-Haulers tent and Troop 160 banners set up near the boat launch. This will be our check-in, equipment, instruction, and gathering area for the day.
Please arrive a little before noon when possible so we can unload boats, check in participants, fit PFDs, and get everyone ready for the water.
Kayaking and Water Activities
Scouts and family members will have opportunities to learn and practice basic kayaking skills, including:
Proper PFD fitting
Kayak and paddle basics
Paddle strokes and boat control
Water safety and communication
Wet exits and water-confidence skills
Basic rescue and reentry skills
Scouts may also have an opportunity to complete portions of the Kayaking Merit Badge. Completion will depend on each Scout successfully demonstrating the required skills.
Bring Your Boats and Gear
The Keel-Haulers will bring a variety of kayaks, paddles, PFDs, safety equipment, inflatable goals, and experienced volunteers.
Families are also encouraged to bring:
Their own kayaks or paddleboards
Paddles
Properly fitted PFDs
Other usable paddling equipment
Extra boats or gear that another participant may safely borrow
Please label personal and loaner equipment with the owner’s name. All equipment should be in safe, usable condition.
You do not need to own a kayak to participate.
Boat Ball
After practicing our paddling skills, we plan to set up the inflatable goals and play boat ball.
Boat ball is similar to water polo but is played from kayaks. It is a fun way to practice paddling, maneuvering, teamwork, and boat control.
Community Potluck
Everyone is invited to stay for a community potluck near the Keel-Haulers tent.
Each family is asked to bring a main dish, side dish, snack, dessert, drinks, or another item to share. Please bring a serving utensil with your dish and label any common food allergens.
Because we will not have a reserved pavilion, families should also bring folding chairs, camp chairs, or picnic blankets.
What to Bring
Clothing that can get completely wet
Secure water shoes
A towel
Dry clothes for afterward
Sunscreen
Drinking water
Folding chairs or a picnic blanket
A potluck contribution
Personal paddling equipment, when available
A properly fitted PFD must be worn during all on-water activities.
This event is weather dependent. Our planned backup date is Sunday, August 9, 2026.
